Good Dog Blackie!

We had to put Blackie to sleep this morning. She was a great dog and our house will not feel the same without her. We adopted her when she was about 5 years old. She was eleven, so we've had a very nice time with her.

She had hurt her leg twice in December and never fully recovered. We have been medicating her and she had seemed to be pretty comfortable but in the last week or so she had lost her appetite. Last night she flat out refused to eat for the second day in a row, so we knew it was time. I begged her to go on her own, but she was still with us this morning.

We were able to say our goodbyes and Jess took her to the vet this morning after I took Jack to school. He stayed with her the whole time and said it was really peaceful. I like to imagine that she is now chasing rabbits or tennis balls in the sky.

I went through my pictures and have some of my favorites.
This is the first picture of her as a "big sister." Her life didn't change too much when Jack was brought home, she still slept all the time, we were just a little grouchier. And it may have actually been better, especially once Jack started eating real food.

Blackie always loved it when the grandparents visited too. She was pretty special when they left one day and thought she needed to cuddle to get over her sadness. I will miss cuddling with her when I watch tv at night.

She was maybe less than excited to have to wear a seat-belt and share the backseat with Jack on rides to Holdrege.

Like I said, she spent most of her time asleep. Every morning she'd cover up her face as if it would be too much to have to get up and move somewhere else to sleep for the day.

She did maybe get harassed a bit when Jack was born, but I don't think that really had anything to do with Jack, there were just more toys and contraptions for me to force her to play with.

Jack was always excited to give Blackie a hug and very sweet to her.
I think she liked it most when we'd all play outside.

I will always think of Blackie on her back. I loved finding her asleep in the back yard legs in the sky.

Even after she was injured, she was always involved in what we were doing at home. It will be strange not stepping over or around her.

We will really miss Blackie. She was the softest sweetest dog you could imagine. I am reluctant to move on because I know a new dog will not be able to completely fill the void left by Blackie. She was always a good dog and so I say "Good Girl!"
